Sign In with GPT, Anthropic vs. the Pope, Paramount Rebrands as Skydance
ChatGPT sign-in could shift inference costs to users’ subscriptions as debates over model consciousness move into public institutions.

Signing in with a ChatGPT account could reshape the economics of AI applications. Instead of funding every model call, a developer could let users draw on the capacity included in their own OpenAI subscription. For small teams, that portability removes a cost barrier that has turned fast-growing products into unexpectedly large API bills.
Compute becomes part of the payment layer
The model could make inference-heavy products viable, from language-learning tools to image generation and agentic features inside existing software. It also removes friction: users would not need to manage an API key or immediately create another billing relationship.
The strategic trade-off is control. A platform that provides identity, compute and billing can become the front door to an ecosystem. Developers may gain distribution and utilization while surrendering part of the customer relationship, echoing the economics of mobile app stores.
Model consciousness leaves the lab
The dispute involving Anthropic and the Vatican shows that questions about machine consciousness are moving into public institutions. Pope Leo argues for a fundamental distinction between human art and output generated through statistical computation. Anthropic figures have pressed for the possibility of present or future model consciousness to be taken seriously.
There is no settled answer, but the argument already has governance implications: what status a system might receive, what duties its maker carries, and how society distinguishes simulation from experience or intention.
Markets are still taking shape
The episode cites a figure suggesting that only 2% of US households pay directly for AI, although bundles containing Gemini, Grok and other assistants make the number hard to interpret. Consumer adoption may therefore arrive less through standalone AI subscriptions than through intelligence embedded in products people already buy.
Similar platform shifts are visible elsewhere. Tesla’s assisted-driving experience is presented as a powerful differentiator while traditional automakers appear years away from matching it. In media, the Skydance combination brings together film, television, news and live programming in a stronger package for competing with Netflix.
The emerging pattern
The next durable advantage may not belong to the best model alone. It will come from combining compute, identity, distribution and billing into a low-friction experience. Companies controlling that layer can expand an ecosystem while also setting its rules.
