Goodfire's new essay: AI may be far more understandable than we thought
Interpretability research may offer new ways to inspect model mechanisms and detect some unwanted behaviors.

Interpretability could change how researchers evaluate AI systems. Goodfire reports that neurons in a vision model and a large language model can be linked to understandable functions. The point is not to declare these models safe, but to better connect their internal mechanisms with observed behavior.
Experiments discussed by Nate B Jones suggest internal signals can expose some shortcuts that transcript review misses. That creates a path to diagnose reward hacking and test whether corrections hold in new situations.
The next challenge is generalizing these methods to larger models and embedding them in reliable tools. Nate expects professional applications first, followed by interfaces that give people more control over algorithmic recommendations.
